The story behind VOFS

In 1975, Gaddafi entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malta to establish a brand new international radio station. The objective was clear: to propagate Gaddafi's personal ideologies and Libya's political, social, and economic accomplishments worldwide.

The Radio Voice of Friendship and Solidarity (VOFS) emerged as the flagship project of the Overseas Broadcasting Department of the Libyan Jamahiriya.

Funk & Disco as agitprop

By the early 1980s, Funk and Disco music had reached its zenith, a phenomenon not overlooked by VOFS. Between 1980 and 1985, VOFS produced and distributed seven music albums featuring a diverse array of Maltese artists, including notable names like Bayzo and Mary Rose Mallia. Renowned Maltese composers like Raymond Agius, known for composing many of Malta's Eurovision entries, contributed to these albums.

To preserve invaluable history.

This website, while unrelated to the original Radio VOFS, serves as a reimagined platform for hosting most of the records produced by the SPLAJ Overseas Broadcasting Department. Each album released by VOFS will undergo acquisition, digitization, and subsequent upload to this website, providing listeners with access to the music. Moreover, all albums will be available for free download later down the line. Our aim is to preserve these remarkable records and the music they contain for the enjoyment of all.
